Derek D. Cunningham

Managing Principal and CEO

Derek Cunningham is the Managing Principal and CEO of U.S. Strategic Capital. Derek has been the owner of several successful small businesses before being recruited into Investment Banking 10 years ago to work with SE Financial Holdings in Atlanta. From 2005 to 2007, Derek was a Senior Vice President at SAMCO Capital Markets, out of Dallas, Texas, where he was credited with personally raising more than $260 million for community banks and PE Funds throughout the U.S. with a 100 percent success rate for the capital campaigns. From 2007 until 2012, Derek was a Managing Director at Commerce Street Capital; running their Bank Capital Group which was responsible for raising $547 million over 31 different equity offerings just during the economic downturn. Derek has successfully raised capital for Small Business Investment Companies (SBIC’s), a multitude of Private Equity Funds, in addition to 2nd & 3rd stage funding of several small businesses.

Derek is a founder and Board member of the Compass Alpha, Compass Phoenix and CFIII Funds which are Private Equity Real Estate Funds based in Atlanta. He is also on the Board of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity alumni association for the Beta Delta Chapter. Derek earned a Bachelor of Business Administration with a focus on Finance and Marketing from the University of Georgia. He also graduated with honors from the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University and holds FINRA 7, 63, and 79 securities licenses. Derek is an active volunteer and has taught educational classes at the Atlanta Mission Shelter dozens of times, been involved in the Big Brother program and is a member at North Point Community Church. He resides in Milton, Georgia, with his wife and their two sons.
